Making a good impression with your recruiter is the first step to being put forward for interviews. Don’t forget recruiters can often open career doors, which could otherwise be closed to you, as many companies we work with choose not to advertise their roles.
Below are 8 tips on how to work best with your recruiter:
Regular communication
Even though you may be at work, try and reply to emails/phone calls/texts as soon as possible. Recruiters are often working to tight deadlines set by an employer so you will have more chance of being put forward for an interview if you get back to them quickly.
Know who is representing you
If you are speaking to more than one recruiter and are not fully aware of each agency and who they are representing things could get complicated. To manage the process better, keep a record of when you speak to each recruiter and which role you spoke about.
Tell us about other offers or processes you are involved with
Be honest from the outset if you are interviewing for other roles. It’s never a bad thing to be in demand in the eyes of a potential employer. If we are informed, we can speed up the process with the client and we can get you an interview quicker so you will have more opportunities to weigh up.
Give accurate details of salary expectations, benefits and bonuses
Always supply your recruiter with the most up-to-date and correct information to allow us to find the most suitable matches. If you are unsure about your market value, ask your recruiter for some advice.
Don’t be too informal
Treat the first time you meet with your recruiter as if it were an interview; don’t turn up in jeans and a t-shirt. This is also applicable to your general tone and demeanour – so no swearing or talking negatively. Show you are serious about finding a new role.
Keep us updated on your current situation
Mention your round the world trip/yoga retreat or trek across Brazil in your initial conversation with your recruiter. If you’re attending interviews and get a job offer and this means you are not available for the next 6 weeks, we need to keep your potential employer in the loop.
Have your up-to-date CV ready
We are likely to ask for an up-to-date version of your CV. Don't rush and aim to be as informative as you can about your previous skills and experience.
Avoid going directly to an employer
If we have discussed a role and you know who the client is, it's not wise to go behind the recruiters back and contact the client directly. Often the recruiter will have agreed terms with the client and you going straight to the hiring manager will be looked upon unfavourably rather than getting your foot in the door.
