About the Role

Cobalt has partnered with a client who has experienced consistent growth thanks to our commitment to technical excellence and client-focused services and they are seeking a skilled Senior Ecologist to join our dynamic team and continue to build on our success.

As a Senior Ecologist, you will have the autonomy to manage and deliver projects from start to finish. Your responsibilities will include conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Biodiversity Impact Assessments, protected species surveys, and Ecological Impact Assessments. You'll also be involved in preparing quotations, tenders, and managing field teams. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys a challenging environment and wants to develop a diverse skill set. Specialists are also welcome, as they encourage their team members to carve out their own niches within the business.

The position requires travel and occasional overnight stays, with a focus on maintaining a good work-life balance through reasonable caps on travel time and out-of-hours work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage ecological surveys (Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, UK Habs) and protected species assessments.
  • Conduct detailed ecological impact assessments and biodiversity evaluations.
  • Prepare and submit quotations, tenders, and manage client relations.
  • Lead field teams and ensure the successful completion of projects.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and clients.
  • Prepare and secure European Protected Species Mitigation (EPSM) licences.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • A genuine passion for ecology and environmental conservation.
  • Experience conducting habitat surveys and protected species assessments.
  • Survey licence for at least one protected species (e.g., bats, dormice, great crested newts).
  • Proven ability to lead field teams and manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to design surveys and produce accurate quotations for work.
  • Full driving licence and access to a car.

Desirable Skills:

  • Expertise in one or more specialist ecological areas (e.g., bats, dormice, rare reptiles).
  • CIEEM membership or eligibility.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in an ecology-related field.
  • Experience with QGIS or ArcGIS.
  • Ability to mentor and manage junior staff.
  • Experience in business development and networking.
