Job Title - Assistant Quantity Surveyor

Location - Reading

Project - Car Parks

Salary - £35,000 / £40,000

Client / Project

Cobalt is currently working with a global contractor that are looking for an assistant Quantity Surveyor to work on 2 major multi story car parks. The successful candidate with have some site experience, will be educated, (CICES / RICS) and have a real attitude to succeed.

Summary of Role:

  • Responsible to the project commercial lead for a number of the commercial aspects of a project / section of a larger project.

  • Works with the project team to protect the our clients commercial position, whilst developing an understanding of contractual, commercial, insurance and legal processes relating to contracts.

  • Will be partly responsible for planning and managing their own works and sometimes that of a Commercial Assistant.

  • Will be working towards completion, or will have recently achieved completion of a first degree, or similar, quantity surveying qualification.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Begins to develop a commercial and technical knowledge and works closely with the delivery team to understand and develop techniques and solutions to meet business and customer needs

Start Up of New Projects

  • Develop an appreciation of pre-contract management and project commercial start-up procedures

Procurement

  • Assists with subcontract procurement in accordance with the procurement schedule timetable, in accordance with our clients procurement process and policy.

  • Develop an ability to procure materials and off site services in an efficient manner as directed ensuring organisations are capable of carrying out the work in accordance with best practice, legal requirements and the our clients procurement procedures and policies

  • Assists in the preparation of work package content sheets.

  • Assist in the preparation of subcontract invitations to tender and evaluate tender returns (time, cost, quality and SHE)

  • Understand the importance of the supply chain to deliver continuous improvement in terms of time, cost, quality and learning of all parties

Applications for Payment and Invoicing

  • Assist in the timely preparation of valuations, submissions of invoices and receipt of payment.

  • Assist in the prompt preparation and settlement of final accounts.

Cost Control

  • Understand principle unit costs of resources (labour, plant, equipment and materials)

  • Assist in the preparation of material wastage reconciliations

  • Identify any unnecessary costs and inefficient activities

  • Assists in the review plant and equipment schedules to ensure efficiency of use

Accounting and Reporting

  • Contribute to the production of accurate and timely CVR reports and forecasts

  • Understands the need for accurate and robust reporting structures Become aware of the need for an understanding of planning and programming to contribute to accurate progress reporting.

Risk and Opportunity Management

  • Develop ability to identify and understand risks and opportunities in projects.

Change Control

  • Able to recognise and record "Change"

  • Participate in early value engineering activities as part of the project team, ensuring all associated costs of change are included within the evaluation

Programming and Project Controls

  • Develop a knowledge of programming and sequencing requirements

Main Contract

  • Become aware of the contractual relationships between the various parties and "stakeholders", including our client's contractual obligations in relation to those interested parties, with particular emphasis to Conditions Precedent.

  • Is aware that all necessary contractual notices must be put in place, timely and accurately and in accordance with our client's contractual obligations.

Subcontract Administration

  • Participate in the preparation of all necessary subcontract notices accurately and on time

  • Assist in the preparation of subcontract instructions

  • Adhere to robust subcontract change control procedures

  • Prepare timely and accurate payments for authorisation for basic subcontract packages

  • Assist in the prompt preparation and settlement of final accounts, including Compensation Events (variations), claims and disputes

  • Re-measurement and provision of quantified schedules of works and / or bills of quantities On-site quantification of unfixed materials

  • Checking of daywork sheets or time and material records
