About the Role

Job Title -Senior Planner

Projects - Civil Engineering & Groundwork's

Salary - £80,000 / £100,000 (Depending on experience) Car Allowance, travel, pension bonus

The Client

We are working with a established UK civil engineering and groundworks contractor that delivers complex infrastructure, structural and urban development projects across multiple sectors. This business is known for its proactive approach, commitment to safety and quality, and strong track record in delivering challenging projects on time, safely and within budget.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Planner to lead and manage the planning and programming function across key bids, pre-construction and construction phases. You will work closely with internal teams, the supply chain and key stakeholders to develop and maintain robust, logic-driven programmes that support successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead planning activities on selected projects, producing professional and achievable programmes from tender through to construction.
  • Collaborate in creating, reviewing and administering schedules and planning deliverables, including methodology, planning philosophy and reporting.
  • Identify planning scope, major constraints, contractual requirements, and sequence logic in collaboration with delivery teams and supply chain.
  • Establish and analyse critical path logic and communicate programme details with internal teams and external stakeholders throughout project stages.
  • Apply resource planning and levelling techniques as necessary and present programme details at appropriate levels.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual programme obligations, progressing updates as required with supporting narrative and analysis.
  • Liaise with third parties critical to the planning process, ensuring their contributions and constraints are understood and reflected in the programme.
  • Provide periodic progress updates, risk analysis, and scenario planning input to support proactive decision making.

Additional Accountabilities at Contract Stage

  • Implement and monitor overall planning strategy, sequence and activity timing aligned to contract requirements.
  • Proactively identify and flag issues or delays impacting programme delivery to project leadership.
  • Issue contract programmes and supporting reports to project leads for onward sharing with clients and stakeholders.
  • Ensure all project planning and programme outputs necessary for effective delivery are completed.
  • Deliver timely, accurate progress reports explaining work status, key risks and mitigation plans.
  • Think commercially to focus on activities that deliver genuine value to the project.

Experience & Knowledge Required

  • Significant experience in planning civil engineering, infrastructure or groundworks projects, with a solid site background (site engineer/agent preferred).
  • Strong understanding of planning, programming and progress monitoring methodologies.
  • Experience in identifying and handling risks, opportunities and change impacts within programmes.
  • Knowledge of contractual planning requirements and standards (e.g., NEC, JCT).
  • Proven ability to engage effectively with multi-discipline teams and external stakeholders.
  • Appreciation of construction methods, plant, labour and sequencing demands within complex delivery environments.

Skills & Attributes

  • Advanced proficiency in planning software, ideally Primavera P6 and/or Asta Powerproject.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to produce reports and present programmes clearly.
  • Meticulous, organised and proactive with a strong work ethic.
  • Capable of working independently and using initiative to make informed planning decisions.

Qualifications

  • Recognised technical or construction industry qualification, with relevant planning or project controls certification an advantage.
